Elul - A Time to Prepare
What's Up!

cornerstone.jpgRabbi Middleton writes: Now that the long summer days are growing shorter and the month of Elul has arrived, our minds turn to the New Year.

‘Elul’, says Moses ben Abraham of Premsla, 'is a time to prepare oneself for the High Holidays with reflection and teshuvah. ‘Ani l’dodi v’dodi li ‘ - I am my beloved’s and my beloved is mine - make up the word elul. If we genuinely desire to return to God in teshuvah, then God’s love will be stirred towards us and our teshuvah will be accepted.’

Teshuvah does not just mean ‘returning’ – it also means ‘response’. The month Elul demands of us not just to reflect on the past but to respond to it appropriately in order to secure a better future.
