Features Print
features250.jpgMiddlesex New Synagogue isn't only ritual, education and community events, and neither is theMNSwebsite. Just like the colour supplement that drops out of your week-end newspaper or the free local magazine that drops onto your doormat, the Features section aims to provide a little light relief.

This section is for you to contribute any article with a Jewish theme (or not) that you think would be of interest not only to the MNS community, but also to the wider Jewish and non-Jewish communities.

Do you have a particular interest with a Jewish theme: genealogy or London's East End, Yiddish or Jewish literature, a tasty recipe that you would like to share, or perhaps a story?

ZZZ - The Sound of Sleep Print

zephaniah.jpgMichael Barnett writes: Frequently there are occasions when sleep evades me. It is then that I resort to a strategy which invariably leads to slumber within a short time – the Alphabet Game. I select a category, e.g., “Book Titles” and then go through the alphabet, trying to find an example for each letter. One of my favourite categories is “Biblical Names”. Usually, finding any example for ‘Z’ – if you are unlucky enough to get that far – is difficult, but with Biblical Names you have struck lucky, for there is a plethora of names to choose from: Zadok, Zaphenath-paneah, Zebediah, Zebulun, Zechariah, Zelophehad, Zerah Zeresh, Zerubbabel, Zidon and then there is Zephaniah.

Subject: Installing a Husband

Dear This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it

I recently upgraded from Boyfriend 5.0 to Husband 1.0 and noticed a distinct slow down in system performance, particularly in the flower and jewellery applications, which operated flawlessly under Boyfriend 5.0.

In addition, Husband 1.0 uninstalled many other valuable programs, such as Romance 9.5 and Attention 6.5, and then installed undesirable programs such as Poker Night 3.0 and Golf Clubs 4.1.

Conversation 8.0 no longer runs, and HouseCleaning 2.6 simply crashes the system. Please note that I have tried running Nag 5.3 to fix these problems, but to no avail.

What can I do?

Regards,

Desperate Housewife of Northwood

Taking Care of Our Sifre Torah Print
torahandyad.jpgRabbi Kathleen de Magtige-Middleton writes: MNS is fortunate in that it possesses a large number of Scrolls; 11 in total. In days past the number of Scrolls would be an indication of the wealth of a community, for the Sifre Torah are the most valuable possessions a Jewish Community has – not just spiritually, but also financially. Scrolls are handwritten by a trained Scribe known as a Sofer Stam (Stam is an acronym for Sefer Torah, Tefillin and Mezuzot) on specially prepared sheets of parchment; each sheet is sewn to the next with a golden needle and special thread, known as gid (sinew), made from tendons, and is written with special ink and a quill, cut from the feather of a kosher bird. There are exactly 304,805 letters in the Torah and it takes a Sofer on average about a year to complete a Sefer. For all these reasons and more, it is of extreme importance that congregations take good care of their Scrolls, because any damage, even the slightest discoloration or crack in the letters, might render the Scroll pasul - no longer kosher (fit for use).
